How Chefs Use Fractions Every Day!

Ever watched a cooking show and heard someone say “add 3/4 cup of flour” or “a pinch is about 1/8 of a teaspoon”? Chefs use fractions constantly, and not just the easy ones like 1/2. A professional kitchen runs on fractions.

Here’s a real situation: a recipe for pancakes serves 4 people and calls for 2 cups of flour. But tonight, only 2 people are eating. A chef has to figure out half of every single ingredient: half of 2 cups is 1 cup, half of 1/4 teaspoon of salt is 1/8 teaspoon, and so on. Get it wrong, and the pancakes come out wrong too.

Restaurant chefs face this on a bigger scale. If a recipe is written for 10 servings but a table orders enough for 35 people, the chef has to scale the whole recipe up by 3 1/2 times, multiplying every single fraction in the recipe by 3.5. That’s exactly the kind of fraction multiplication you’re learning in Unit 6.

Bakers deal with even trickier fractions, since baking is closer to a science. A cookie recipe might need 2 1/4 cups of sugar, and if you’re doubling it, you need to add mixed numbers together correctly (2 1/4 + 2 1/4) to avoid throwing off the whole batch.

👌Try it yourself: Next time you’re in the kitchen, pick a recipe and try doubling or halving it. You’re doing exactly the same fraction math a professional chef uses every single shift.
