This unit is all about putting your skills to work in real life. Math shows up everywhere: cooking, planning a trip, splitting a pizza with friends, saving up for something you want.
The hardest part of a word problem usually isn’t the math, it’s figuring out which operation to use. Here’s a trick: look for clue words.
“Total,” “altogether,” “in all” → usually addition
“How many are left,” “difference,” “how much more” → usually subtraction
“Each,” “groups of,” “times as many” → usually multiplication
“Split evenly,” “each person gets,” “per” → usually division
Key conversions worth memorizing:
60 minutes = 1 hour
60 seconds = 1 minute
16 ounces = 1 pound
12 inches = 1 foot
3 feet = 1 yard
100 cents = $1
Example 1: A movie starts at 2:15 pm and lasts 1 hour 45 minutes. What time does it end?
Add the hour first: 2:15 pm + 1 hour = 3:15 pm
Now add the 45 minutes: 3:15 + 45 minutes. Since 15 + 45 = 60, that’s a full hour, which rolls over: 3:15 + 45 min = 4:00 pm
Answer: 4:00 pm
Example 2: A car travels 60 miles per hour for 3 hours. How far does it go?
“Per hour” for 3 hours means we multiply: 60 × 3
Answer: 180 miles
